{"id":220,"date":"2025-05-28T21:03:50","date_gmt":"2025-05-28T21:03:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aiinstitute.hbs.edu\/lish\/?page_id=220"},"modified":"2025-05-28T21:12:49","modified_gmt":"2025-05-28T21:12:49","slug":"the-age-of-ai","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/aiinstitute.hbs.edu\/lish\/research-tracks\/past-projects\/the-age-of-ai\/","title":{"rendered":"The Age of AI"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Objectives<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile is-vertically-aligned-top is-image-fill-element\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 33%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For firms, AI is becoming a central engine of execution helping to alleviate traditional bottlenecks which have constrained scale and growth for hundreds of years.&nbsp; Digital operations driven by AI enable firms to scale operations efficiently, provide opportunities for scope (e.g., enhanced varieties of products and services), as well as continuously learn and improve upon processes and products. However, this AI-driven digital transformation requires a fundamental re-architecture of the firm\u2019s operating model. In firms structured around the ubiquity of data and information flow, many traditional critical path steps will be made by digital systems and software rather than by humans. As the adoption of AI technologies continues to grow, questions about the shifting roles of managers and employees become even more pressing.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" src=\"http:\/\/aiinstitute.hbs.edu\/lish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2025\/05\/working-woman-technology-computer-7374.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-221 size-full\" style=\"object-position:17% 31%\" srcset=\"https:\/\/aiinstitute.hbs.edu\/lish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2025\/05\/working-woman-technology-computer-7374.jpg 600w, https:\/\/aiinstitute.hbs.edu\/lish\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/37\/2025\/05\/working-woman-technology-computer-7374-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To address these issues, our research on AI encompasses a range of methods including enterprise surveys, case studies, and field experiments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Surveys:<\/strong>&nbsp;By assessing the current context of how AI is diffusing across different types of firms (by sector, size, age, etc.) within the economy, LISH aims to shed light on the types of complementary technologies and organizational structures associated with the use of this technology.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Case Studies:&nbsp;<\/strong>The narratives that comprise a case study serve as a magnifying glass to peer below the quantitative statistics and provide real life qualitative examples about how AI is being implemented by individual firms, as well as the barriers they face to adoption, reorganization, and value attainment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Field Experiments:&nbsp;<\/strong>Partnering with outside organizations, LISH will design and conduct field experiments to assess the causal relationship between AI and enterprise performance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Objectives For firms, AI is becoming a central engine of execution helping to alleviate traditional bottlenecks which have constrained scale and growth for hundreds of years.&nbsp;
